Ghost Story:
My mother had often told us (my siblings and I) about a presence she felt and an apparition she had seen on more than one occasion.
It started appearing to her when my youngest brother was a baby. We, as a family, were staying with my grandparents. My mother and father slept in a bedroom downstairs, across the hall from my grandparents room. They had my brother's crib in their room. My mother told me that the household pet had awakened them one night in a serious fright. Mind you this dog was a Great Dane and as loveable and babyish as they come anyway. But to get to the point, my parents were asleep and out of nowhere the dog started barking and jumped over my brothers crib to land right smack dab in the middle bed between them and lay there in fright, shaking like a leaf. My mother had of course heard stories that the house that my grandparents lived in was haunted but never really paid much mind to it. After the incident with the dog stranger things started to happen and were witnessed by members of the entire family. Door knobs rattling, windows being opened, the poor dog being spooked time and again--once bad enough to nearly scratch his way through a 3 inch solid oak door trying to get inside from the enclosed back porch--, seeing footprints outside the house in the damp grass when no one had been there, etc ....
But the main thing that stuck out in my mother's mind and mine years later was her seeing a ghost...
My mother awoke one night to see --floating about two feet from the floor-- a small child, a boy, dressed in an old-fashioned night dress, carrying in his arms a stuffed teddy bear. He did not make a sound or try to disturb anyone just simply floated from room to room of the house as if checking on each individual person there. My mother did not feel frightened, only had a secure feeling. The last place the boy would always go was to hover near the end of my brother's crib as if keeping him safe and watching over him. He would stay there for a minute or two just watching my bother sleep and then fade away into the darkness.
As I am now grown and having seen the child myself on numerous occasions, I hold no fear against the child ghost. My mother believes that it could very possibly be the spirit of a child that she miscarried, but will never know for sure because it has--in all of my thirty years on this good earth--not ever tried to communicate it only lets itself be seen.
This story is true and anywhere we have moved the child ghost has been seen at least once. I think it lets itself be seen to let us know that it is still around and probably will be for a very long time to come.
