The Haunted Catacombs of Paris
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris, until they were closed due to vandalism in 2009, was the Catacombs of Paris. The Catacombs were first opened in the 18th century and served as an underground cemetery for seceral decades. Bodies were moved to the catacombs as Paris continued to grow, and currently there are over 6,000,000 skeletons in the catacombs.
Many believe that the way the skeletons are put in the catacombs shows disrespect, and that is why the catacombs are thought to be haunted by restless spirits looking for their skeletons. During World War Two, the French Resistance hid in the catacombs because the Nazis were too afraid to enter.
Many visitors to the catacombs have stated they have heard voices around them when no one near them is talking, and several have become so frightened they decided never to enter again.
Ghostly figures have been seen roaming through the passageways of the catacombs and some tour groups report seeing large groups of figures walking behind them as they go on the tour. Photos often show apparitions and orbs throughout the catacombs.
One scary legend is that those who go into the catacombs by themselves for a laugh, end up never being seen again.
