The Most Haunted Spot in Scotland: Edinburgh Castle
Dominating the skyline of Edinburgh is Edinburgh Castle. The area has been home to people since the ninth century BC, but it was in the 12th century that a castle was built. After the 17th century, the castle became a military base and is now a historic site that tourists from all over the world visit.
The castle is also well-known for being haunted by several ghosts, seen by many visitors to the castle over the years.
One popular legend is of the Tunnel Pipe. Under the city of Edinburgh, there are several tunnels extending throughout the region. When they were first found a few centuries ago, a piper was sent to explore the tunnels. He played on the flute so they could hear his progress, but suddenly his playing stopped and no trace of the piper was ever found again. Many visitors to the castle now report seeing and hearing the piper moving in the tunnels.
Another musician who haunts the castle is the headless drummer, who plays ghostly drums in the castle. It is said that he only appears when the castle is about to be attacked, and since that has not happened in centuries, he has only been heard, but not seen.
In the castle, there is also a dog cemetery, and it is said that one dog can be heard walking and moving throughout the castle, even when no dog can be found.
Many visitors to the castle feel the sense that they are being watched, but by what they do not know.
